Focus: 1 Samuel 17:50-53 (NIV) The One Thing: What you did then matters less than what you do now. Know K1 Think of a memory that causes you to cringe. Grow G1 What did God say to you through the service / message today? G2 What stood out to you through Hudson’s testimony? G3 Do you identify more with David in 1 Samuel 17:5—53 or with the Israelite soldiers? Why do you think this is? G4 In the light of 1 John 2:1-2, what did Dan mean when he said “What you do now matters more than what you did then?” G5 Imagine you were one of the soldiers in verse 52 and 53: as a soldier witnessing David’s victory and the Philistines’ retreat, how did seeing God’s power through David change your faith or perspective on God's ability to deliver His people from seemingly impossible situations? G6 David was young when he defeated Goliath, yet he set a powerful example for the entire nation of Israel. In light of 1 Timothy 4:12, how can you, regardless of your age, set an example for others in your faith and actions, especially when facing challenges or "giants" in your life? Show S1 Meditate on 1 Samuel 17:47 and pray for David’s confidence to face whatever is coming next.

Explore the emotional and spiritual implications of Samuel’s reaction to God’s decision. G2 How does David's anointing by Samuel symbolize a shift in Israel's future, and what might this foreshadow about David's reign? G3 What lessons can we learn from God’s command to Samuel to look beyond outward appearances when selecting David as king? G4 How does the concept of middle knowledge, which suggests that God knows all possible outcomes of human free will decisions, relate to God's statement in 1 Samuel 16:7 about looking at the heart rather than outward appearances when choosing David as king? Show S1 In Mark 4:26-34 and 2 Corinthians 5:15-17 how are we given more insight into how God sees things?

Scripture: 1 Samuel 8:4-20; 11:14-15 Know K1 Imagine if God set up a forcefield to prevent us ever doing anything sinful? How would this world operate? What would it look like? Grow G1 Why did the Israelites demand a king despite Samuel's warnings and God's guidance up to that point? What does this reveal about their relationship with God and their understanding of leadership? G2 Samuel outlines several negative consequences of having a king, including conscription, forced labor, and taxation (1 Samuel 8:11-18). Why do you think the Israelites were willing to accept these potential consequences? How does this reflect human nature or societal pressures? G3 How does God’s response to Israel’s request for a king (1 Samuel 8:7-9) reflect His understanding of human free will and His role as their divine leader? What can we learn from God’s willingness to grant their request despite knowing it wasn't in their best interest? G4 Scot McKnight discusses the transition from a theocracy to a monarchy in the biblical narrative. How does this transition reflect the changing dynamics of Israel’s relationship with God and human leaders? G5 How do the issues and concerns raised in 1 Samuel 8 regarding the desire for a human leader compare to modern-day leadership and governance? What lessons can contemporary societies draw from this biblical narrative about the nature of leadership and the expectations of those who are led? Show S1 Who is (or has been) your Samuel: someone that God has used to speak truth or warning into your life? How have you responded?

What does Eli’s response in verse 17 tell us about Eli’s state of mind? G6 Eli taught Samuel to listen to God even while Eli was morally compromised and under judgment.
