In what ways does Jesus’s choice of dining partners challenge your assumptions about who belongs at the table of the Kingdom? K2 "If Jesus is establishing a new kingdom, he’s going to be upsetting some of the social power structures". What social or cultural structures in your own life or community might Jesus be seeking to upset? Grow in Groups K3 Jesus warns against inviting people who can repay you, hinting that it's a social transaction that is "not good for our souls". How does seeking reciprocity—whether in relationships, good deeds, or even charitable giving—hinder our spiritual growth? K4 Dan suggests that by inviting those who are not like us, we can get to know them and challenge our own conclusions about them. When have you found that intentionally spending time with someone different from you has led to personal growth or a changed perspective? Show Up and Serve S1 We end by asking, "Who do you need to get to know better?" and "Who is not LIKE you that you need to get acquainted with?". Brainstorm practical, tangible ways that you can apply the principle of radical hospitality in your own life this week. S2 When we practice radical hospitality, the church becomes a "showcase of Jesus' new kingdom". What does this "showcase" look like in a real-world context, and what might be the biggest challenge in making it a reality in your community?

What does this reveal about His identity as King and His priorities for His Kingdom? K2 How does Jesus’ compassion toward the bent-over woman show the heart of the King compared to the legalistic approach of the synagogue ruler? K3 The previous section (vv. 1–9) speaks of repentance and fruitfulness. How does Jesus’ healing here illustrate what “bearing fruit” in God’s Kingdom looks like? Grow in Groups G1 How do you think the synagogue crowd felt as they watched this encounter? Why do you think they rejoiced in Jesus’ actions? How can we as a community respond similarly when God works among us? G2 Jesus publicly defended the woman against criticism (vv. 14–16). What does this teach us about supporting and standing up for each other in the family of God? Show Up and Serve S1 Jesus noticed and acted for someone in need during a regular gathering. How can we be more attentive to people’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs when we gather as a church? S2 Right after this event, Jesus tells parables about the mustard seed and yeast (vv. 18–21). How does this healing reflect the way the Kingdom grows—quietly, yet powerfully? What does that mean for the small acts of service we can do?

What does Jesus’ response reveal about His identity and mission as King? K2 Verses 28–30 describe Jesus as “gentle and humble in heart.” How does this kingship differ from the way earthly rulers often exercise authority? GROW IN GROUPS G1 In verses 16–19, Jesus addresses the generation’s critical spirit. How can we, as a group, guard against that kind of attitude toward each other and toward God’s work? G2 Jesus invites the weary to come to Him for rest (v. 28). How can we practically help each other experience this rest in our spiritual communities? SHOW UP AND SERVE S1 In verses 20–24, Jesus warns cities that saw His works but did not repent. How does recognizing Jesus as the gentle and humble King motivate us to take action in serving others? S2 How can we embody Christ’s gentleness and humility in our own service—especially when dealing with people who are skeptical, hurting, or resistant to the gospel?

What does Jesus’ refusal to settle the inheritance dispute in verse 14 teach us about His role as King? Why might He redirect the conversation from fairness to greed and the heart? K2. In what ways does recognizing Jesus as King transform how we think about money, security, and success? How does this challenge cultural messages we often hear? GROW IN GROUPS G1 Why do you think Jesus tells this parable to a crowd, rather than just the man who asks the question? What does this say about the importance of learning and growing together? G2 The rich man speaks only to himself in verses 17–19. How can isolation lead us away from generosity and God’s wisdom? How can Christian community help us keep our priorities in check? G3 What’s one way your group or family could encourage each other to be more open-handed and less anxious about possessions? How might this reflect God’s kingdom to others? SHOW UP AND SERVE S1 Jesus calls the man in the parable a “fool.” What made him foolish, and how might we avoid making the same mistake with our resources? What would it look like to be “rich toward God” in your daily life? S2 Where do you sense God inviting you to “show up” this week—with your time, money, or energy—in a way that blesses others and reflects His generosity? What’s one small but tangible step you can take?

What might it look like for you to “take time” to know Jesus in the middle of your busy life? K2 Martha was distracted by many good things. In what ways do we let even good activities pull us away from the better choice of being with Jesus? Grow G1 It’s often easier to do for Jesus than to be with Him. How can being part of a group help us learn to pause and listen like Mary? G2. The example of others matters. Share about a time when someone else’s example of choosing Jesus encouraged you to do the same. How can we encourage each other in this? G3 Martha was serving—but missing something. How can we make sure our serving flows out of time with Jesus, rather than becoming a substitute for it? Show S1. Jesus calls us to serve from a place of rest. What’s one way you can “show up” to serve someone this week—but from a place of spiritual connection, not just busyness? S2. We all have the same 24 hours—often filled with sleeping, working, commuting, scrolling, chores, eating, and relaxing. What’s one area where you could intentionally “take time” from something else this week to be with Jesus? What might that look like?

The One Thing: The Nope of Hope Growgroup Discussion Starters Know Christ as King K1 Why did Jesus "set His face toward Jerusalem" (v. 51), even knowing rejection awaited Him? How does this reveal His kingship and purpose? What can we learn from His determination? Grow in Groups G1 Why do you think the Samaritans rejected Jesus (v. 53)? What does this “no” to Jesus reveal about cultural, political, or spiritual tensions — and how might we encounter similar rejections today? G2 James and John wanted to call down fire (v. 54). Why does Jesus say "no" to that kind of zeal? What does this teach us about following Jesus versus defending Him with force or anger? G3 Jesus says, “Foxes have dens... but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head” (v. 58). Why might Jesus “nope” this would-be follower? How does this challenge our assumptions about comfort and security in service? G4 What do we make of Jesus saying: “Let the dead bury their own dead” (v. 60)? Why does Jesus say someone who looks back is “not fit for service” (v. 62)? How does this hard “no” reframe our priorities when serving the Kingdom? Show Up and Serve S1 Which “nope” in this passage challenges you the most — the rejection Jesus experienced, or the ones He gave to others? What is one way you sense Jesus inviting you to say “no” to something good in order to say “yes” to following Him more fully this week?
