What sort of conversation would you have with someone who is considering divorce?
What message of hope do we as Christians have to offer people who are divorced?
What extra information does Mark 10:10-11 tells us about the circumstances under which divorce is permitted?
How has the view on divorce changed over the past 50-60 years in Canada?
10:5 What do you think of the idea that God makes concessions to sin, even though He doesn’t condone it? Why might He make these concessions?
Read Mark 10:11-12. In the very man-centric society of the 1st century, why were these words so revolutionary? (for further study compare with 1 Corinthians 7:3-4)
Often when we’re talking about marital unfaithfulness we mean “sex outside of marriage”. What other forms of marital unfaithfulness can you think of? Should these be considered grounds for divorce?
If Jesus bore our sin on the cross, He bore the sin of divorce. He became divorced for us on our behalf. What do you think of this statement?
What are the real-world applications of this for the person that has gone through divorce?

The one thing
Get ahead with. At the back of the pack.
Scripture
Mark 9:30-50
Know
Have you ever been overheard having an argument with someone? Or have you ever overheard someone else having an argument? What happened? (Keep details vague if needed!)
Grow
Have you experienced divisiveness / suspicion between different churches in a town, or churchd denominations? How did this impact you?
What is more important as Christians / Churches? Standing up for truth or standing up for unity?
Are there any issues that you believe we shouldn’t budge on as Christians, even if it creates rifts between us and others?
Which lie do you struggle more with:
I’m all that
God needs me
I don’t need you. (We don’t need each other).
Compare Jesus’ words in Mark 9:40 (whoever is not against us is for us) with Matthew 12:30 (who is not with me is against me). Is this a contradiction? Explain your thoughts.
Have you ever met a Christian from another country / culture? What was that experience like for you? How did this experience enrich you?
In what ways can pride prevent Jesus from using us?
Why are Priscilla and Aquila (Acts 18) such a powerful example for us today on how God loves to use imperfect people, such as Apollos?
Say, and ask your growgroup to repeat after you:
Jesus is all that matters
God does not need me; He can use anyone
I need you and you need me.
Ask around the circle: Do you believe these truths?

The Scripture
Mark 9:14-29

Is our generation more or less of a faithless generation than the one Jesus confronted (9:19)? In general, what causes people to change over generations?
How would you describe prayer to one of your unchurched friends?
Why do so many people struggle with prayer?
How would you respond to someone who said that the child’s behaviour represented epilepsy or some other natural disease rather than demonic forces?
Have you ever prayed even though you didn’t feel like it –because you knew it was the right thing to do? What is the different between this and simply heartlessly ‘going through the motions’ of prayer?
According to our passage in Mark 9, what level of faith is needed to enable Jesus to work in our lives?
The disciples failed in verse 18. What did they do after their failure? How can failure be made profitable?
In what situation or area of life do you need to know the freedom of praying to Jesus “Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief”? Take time to pray in your group for this issue. If you group is larger, split into smaller groups.

Take some time to brainstorm as a group about a “Show” project you can do this Christmas – something that will allow you to show the love of Jesus to others.

What was God saying to you through Sunday’s sermon?
Celtic Christianity talks about thin places, where it feels like the fabric between this world and heaven is thinner than it usually is. Have you ever had an experience where the reality of God was unusually strong and so powerful?
Grow
Does your life more reflect the motto Carpe Diem (Seize the Day) or Carpe Eternum (Seize Eternity)? Explain.
What might be the connection between Jesus announcing His mission in Caesarea Philippi (8:31) and Jesus being transfigured on the top of Mount Hermon?
What did Jesus’ transfiguration actually achieve when it was just to 3 people out of all of humanity? Why did He do it?
Read Mark 1:11. And then read Mark 9:7. Look at the timing and the circumstances surrounding both pronouncements (what came just before or just after). How are they similar? How are they different?
Mark threw in a little editor’s comment in 9:6. What might this tell us about Mark’s relationship with Peter?
The book of Mark was written to the persecuted church in Rome. How might the account of the transfiguration been an encouragement to them in their situation?
How can you encourage your own soul with it?
Read 1 Corinthians 13:2 and Romans 12:2 – how are we transformed / transfigured?

The One Thing
These are the things of God: a Messiah that gave up His life so you can know the value of your soul.
The Scripture
Mark 8:27-38
Know
Have you ever had an argument with someone or a heated conversation, only to realize you actually both agreed, you were just using different terminology?
Grow
Read 8:31. What do you think was going through Jesus mind as He shared this list of things He would endure?
8:33 It’s clear that Peter and Jesus had different interpretations of the word “Messiah”. Instead of telling Peter that he misunderstands, why did Jesus harshly call Peter “Satan”?
Read 8:31 and 8:34. Note how many times the word “must” is used or implied.
8:31 - Why was there no other way that Jesus could provide salvation for us?
8:34 – Why is denying ourselves and taking up our cross an essential part of following Christ?
Why should we be a little careful when we use the phrase “It’s just my cross to bear” when talking about the hardships of life? Reference 8:34.
What is your reaction when you hear about the religious tradition of people actually crucifying themselves in the Philippines?
Read 8:36. What are some ways that we can see ourselves or our culture ‘devalue’ the human soul? How does the gospel of Jesus change the narrative?
Read 8:38. What does it mean that Jesus will be ashamed of some people when He returns?
Show
This week, take some time to pray through Mark 8:31, thanking Jesus for what He did for you. Also take some time to pray through Mark 8:34-37 and listen to what God reveals to you through these verses.

Would you consider salvation to be an event or a process? Share the reason why you think this.
Why might it be that Jesus used spit on both these men, when no other healing account before this mentions Jesus using spit? Why this time?
Why did it take “two goes” for Jesus to heal the blind man in Mark 8:25?
Have you ever had a moment of crisis in your faith? Perhaps you were already saved, but this crisis moment did a ‘decisive work’ in your spirit? Talk about it.
In both healing accounts (Mark 7 and Mark 8), Jesus gets the people alone, away from the crowd. Read Matthew 6:6 – why is the ‘secret place’ such an important place for the follower of Jesus?
Is the entrance way to your secret place with God well-trodden or dusty through lack of use?
Think of some real-life things that prevent us from regularly meeting Jesus in the quiet. Share with your group.
Read Romans 8:23-27. Note how often the word “groan” is used and the context. How does this passage help us understand Jesus’ groan or sigh in Mark 7:34?
Have you ever groaned in your prayer life? As much as you are able, share with the group what that was like.
How do you know if your current spiritual vision is all it should be? How do you know if you are seeing clearly?
Why is it vital that we keep coming back to Jesus and allowing Him to keep healing us and restoring us?

Last week Dan preached on “trading tradition for truth” (Mark 7:9-23), about how nothing can defile us from the outside in. This week Jesus spent time with a Syrophoenician (i.e. non-Jewish) woman. What connects the two passages?
Read Matthew 15:23 – how do you explain the disciples’ response to this woman in Matthew’s account? Look at the surrounding verses for context.
Mark 7:25 – take some time to imagine what this woman’s life might have been like. What were her struggles on a daily / weekly basis? What emotional state do you think she was in before she knew Jesus was in town?
Read Mark 7:26-28 What do you make of the “verbal sparring” that Jesus gets into with her? Why didn’t he just heal the girl as soon as she asked?
This was an ‘at distance’ healing. Why do you think Jesus didn’t go with her to the place and do the healing on site, like He did at other times?
Dan said that the word used for “dog” is “little dog” (“pet dog” or “puppy”) – how might this change our reading of the seemingly offensive words that Jesus says in verse 27?
Read verse 28 and 29: why did Jesus interpret the woman’s words as an act of faith?
Can you think of any other verses that encourage us to be bold in our prayers?
Show
What can you apply from the Syrophoenician woman to your own prayer life?

Dan didn't watch TV on Sundays. People in Canada take their hats off to pray. What are some invisible cultural rules that you experienced when you were growing up? How would you explain the value or purpose of that rule to someone from outside your culture?
How did the Pharisees end up with 613 rules, when there were only 10 Commandments?
Name some invisible rules we have in church that exist "just because that's the way it is". Consider whether we should keep them or get rid of them (but you need to give a good reason from scripture for your answer!)
If a cultural tradition cannot be proved from the Bible, does that mean it’s automatically wrong? Explain why.
Are you someone who lives life enjoying the continent of freedom God has created for you, or are you someone who is primarily concerned with not falling off the edge? Why is this?
How might the Pharisees have reached the place where they thought that ignoring the need of their parents was OK, and to do it in Jesus’ name? What does this show us about their heart?
7:8 Can we hold onto the commands of God and to human traditions, or is it always one or the other? Explain your answer.
Take a look at Exodus 20 and choose a couple of commandments and see what they reveal about God’s heart.
We often think about the 10 Commandments as rules. What would change if we view them as primarily revealing the heart and character of God?
Dan said If you do everything for God’s glory, the edge is never an issue. Read 1 Corinthians 10:31 – how does this verse prevent us from sinning (falling off the edge)?
Show
1 Corinthians 10:31 – decide this week to do everything for the glory of God. Before doing anything, ask “Is this going to magnify or diminish God’s glory?” Commit to making your decisions based on that question.

Why do you think Mark included two miracles that were so similar in His gospel account?
Were you surprised to hear that the baskets in Alfresco 5000 (Mark 6) were lunchbox-sized, whereas the baskets in Alfresco 4000 (Mark 8) were laundry basket-sized (able to fit a man in them)? How does this information change how you view the separate accounts?
Share about a time when you have experienced the God of the lunchbox – giving you exactly what you need with nothing left over?
Share about a time when you experienced the God of the laundry basket – giving you an overabundance that blows your mind? (your response may be something physical, but may just as easily be something intangible or spiritual)
In both passages (Mark 6:41 and Mark 8:6), we learn that Jesus simply ‘gives thanks’ for the food. Who do you think did the multiplication of the bread – God the Father or Jesus the Son? Do you think it’s important to distinguish the two or not? Explain your answer.
After Jesus prayed, there is nothing in either account that says: “and suddenly there was a mountain of bread”. Using your imagination, how do you think the miracle took place – was there a visible pile of bread and fish or did the baskets just keep getting replenished as the food was handed out? (Or something else?)
Mark 8:4 – the disciples had just witnessed Jesus feed a crowd of 10-15,000 people (5,000 men). What do we make of their confusion regarding how they were going to feed this new multitude?
Read the questions Jesus asks His disciples in Mark 8:17. Imagine if Jesus was sitting across the table from you. Are there any parts of your life that He would say the similar things to you? Have a conversation with Him about these things.

Dan said that the main point of today’s passage was “Whenever we are in need may we always remember that Jesus will meet our needs – sometimes precisely; sometimes in plentifully, but always perfectly”. Take some time as a group to pray for things that you need to know God’s provision in.
Think of a specific way that you can bring your meagre offerings to God and trust Him to multiply them for His glory. Perhaps it is the step of faith of starting to tithe your income. Perhaps it’s a step of faith to go beyond the tithe. Perhaps it’s using a skill or talent you have for His glory. Perhaps it’s inviting a friend to church or growgroup?
