The Passage: Jeremiah 29:1,4-7 The One Thing: Disciples settle down without settling Growgroup Discussion Starters [Please note, Dan said that if your “exile” is an abusive situation or a place where you feel unsafe, our passage today doesn’t mean “just stay there and wait it out”. Don’t remain in this abusive situation. Get somewhere safe. Get help.] Know K1 When there is bad news, are you someone who would prefer to be told “straight” or would you rather someone keeps the truth from you (or at least gives you a sunny version of the truth)? Can you think of an example? Grow G1 Dan used the word exile to mean “being in a place or situation that you wish you were not”. In what way are you in exile right now? G2 Jeremiah said the exile would last 70 years. The other prophets said it would be 2 years. What do you think was the motivation of the prophets who gave the more optimistic prophecy? G3 Dan said that the prophets who were prophesying that the exile would be over in 2 years were being exceptionally cruel. Why did he said this? Do you think he’s being fair? G4 Jeremiah 29:5-6 | How might God be calling you to settled down in your “exile”? Think of practical ways you can settle down. G5 Jeremiah 29:7 | How can you resist settling in your exile? What might “pursuing the well-being” of the place of exile look like? What are some specific prayers you can can be “praying to the Lord on its behalf”? G6 Determine to settle down but not settle. Mark this date down in your journal. After a week or two, reflect back and allow the Holy Spirit to show you how your heart or disposition has changed. G7 Was there anything else God spoke to you about on Sunday that has not been covered? Show S1 Start praying this week these suggested breath prayers into your exile: o “Jesus, in you I settle down” o “My soul finds rest in you alone” (Psalm 63) o “Jesus, I choose not to settle” o “I pursue the well-being of my situation”

The Passage 2 Timothy 1:1-14 (focus on vv 6-7)The One Thing Disciples take self-encouragement seriously Growgroup Discussion Starters Know K1 Dan’s Great-Grandma told her evacuee daughter Joan, to have “pluck”? What word would we use today instead of pluck? Why is this such an important attribute? Grow G1 Read Psalm 42:5-6. How does this Psalm support the idea that disciples take self-encouragement seriously? G2 2 Timothy 1:5 | RECALL YOUR FAITH | Who is in your faith lineage? (NB: It doesn’t have to be a blood relation). What qualities did you see in these people? G3 2 Timothy 1:5 | RECALL YOUR FAITH | If you are older in years (parent / grandparent), who is in your “future faith lineage”? (Who are you passing YOUR faith on to?). How is this going for you? What might be one thing you can do to improve? G4 2 Timothy 1:4 | RECALL YOUR FAITH | Why are the special difficulties of raising a child in the ways of God as a single parent or solo-Christian parent? Why is this verse so encouraging to SINGLE parents or solo-Christian parents? G5 2 Timothy 1:6 | REKINDLE YOUR GIFT | What is the gift that the Holy Spirit has given you for the good of His kingdom? If you don’t know, ask Him and listen to His answer. If you’ve not yet received a gift from Him, ask Him in faith for one. Or speak to Dan and arrange a time you can pray about this together. G6 2 Timothy 1:7 | RECEIVE THE SPIRIT | What Spirit have we NOT received? What Spirit HAVE we received (3 things)? Look at each of these descriptors of the Spirit we have received. Discuss why each of these is important and how they work so powerfully TOGETHER in the life of the believer. Show S1 Write to someone in your faith lineage and THANK them for their influence.

Your opinion: good or bad? Grow G1 1 Timothy 6:7-10 | How is developing contentment like “clearing the ground”? G2 1 Timothy 6:11-16 | How is godliness like building a house? What are the four walls of this house? (note the action commands in verse 11 and 12). G3 | 1 Timothy 6:11-16 | Which of the four walls is God calling you to obey Him in building right now? G4 1 Timothy 6:11-16 | What are the 6 windows in the “Wall of Pursue”? (verse 11). In what way can these 6 characteristics act like windows in our lives? G5 1 Timothy 6:11-16 | Which of these 6 windows have become dirty in your life? Speak to God about it. G6 1 Timothy 6:17-20 | Why is instructing others in godliness (verse 18) and contentment (verse 17) such an important indicator in the life of the Christian? G7 1 Timothy 6:17-20 | In what way is practicing godliness with contentment such a counter-cultural message? Why is it such a powerful and compelling message? What would a community of faith look like that practiced godliness with contentment? Show S1 Take inventory of your life. Where is the Holy Spirit calling you to focus your attention now? On contentment (clearing the ground) or godliness (building a life that glorifies God). Is there something you can do this week (perhaps meditating on one “window” each day, or choosing to saying “no” to something you want) to nurture this spiritual growth in your life?

Growgroup Discussion Starters Know K1 Can you think of any villains or notorious real-life people that can still teach us worthwhile lessons? Grow G1 Have you ever thought about what is the purpose of wealth? How would you answer the question? G2 Dan said that wealth is like a video game’s “temporary platform” – it fulfils a purpose for a moment and then it is gone. How can “using our wealth” help us get to heaven? (verse 9) In what way does wealth’s “purpose” eventually run out? G3 Verse 9: what do you think Jesus means by “make friends for yourself” using worldly wealth? How can you do this? G4 Verse 11 contrasts “worldly wealth” with “what is genuine”. How is worldly wealth NOT genuine? What do you think the genuine article looks like? G5 Look at your life at the moment and compare it with verse 11 and 12? Does God view your use of wealth as faithful or unfaithful? Unrighteous or unrighteous? Allow Him to speak to you. G6 Who is your master? God or money? Show S1 Even if you already give, give extra money to a missionary or worthwhile cause; someone who is not expecting it.

Growgroup Discussion Starters Know K1 What have you recently lost that caused you to panic? Did you find it in the end? If so, what was your emotion at that moment? If you didn’t, how did you feel? Grow G1 In your mind lay alongside Jesus’ discipleship call in Luke 14:26-27 to “’hate’ your father and mother” and in Luke 15:1 that all the tax collectors and sinners were gathering into Jesus. Pray and see how Luke 15:1 might shine a different light on Luke 14:26-27. G2 What is something you could imagine yourself muttering about or complaining to others about God? How might this be keeping you from intimacy with Jesus? G3 “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them”. Listen to yourself say this. Are you muttering it or shouting it with joy? Do you consider yourself one of the Gathered or a mutterer? Why do you think this is? G4 Do you see salvation primarily as Jesus going OUT to find you (like the shepherd or the woman) or you gathering IN to where Jesus is (like the tax collectors and sinners)? Why are both concepts important in understanding how we come to Jesus? G5 How can Jesus be a safe place for you this week? Talk to Him about it. G6 If you are a complainer or mutterer about how Jesus does stuff, take some time to repent of this and allow Him to gather you in. If you have allowed sin to keep you from intimacy with Jesus, allow Him to come and find you and bring you home. Show S1 Choose a meal this week on your own, with your spouse or with your family, and eat the meal “with Jesus”. Meaning, as you eat, talk to Him about your day. Tell Him what your grateful for. Tell Him what your needs are. Not in “praying kind of way” (eyes closed) but in a conversational way, as if He were there. Maybe you could even set a seat aside for Him to sit with you as the Unseen Guest. Tell Him you’re glad He welcomes sinners like you and eats with you.

What did you learn through the exercise? Grow G1 What struck you about Pastor Li’s story? How can passages like Luke 14:25-33 result in dangerous or unhealthy consequences if not dealt with wisely? What verses in the Bible can bring balance to Luke 14? G2 How do the twin passages of Luke 14:28 and Matthew 10:37 fill in the gaps left by the other passage? What are the differences? Similarities? G3 What is the difference between “explaining” a text and “explaining away” a text? Why is it valuable to sit with difficult passages and not move on too quickly to something ‘easier’? G4 What important truths do we learn about God in our text today? G5 What is Jesus trying to get at in the examples of the tower and the war? How can going “all in” with Jesus be like planning to build a tower or plan a war? G6 Dan ended with the Jim Elliott quotation: "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose." What is God saying to you through these words? Disconcerting? G2 What is it necessary to run WITH ENDURANCE the race marked out for us? What does it mean to endure? Do you think in general we’ve grown in our ability to endure? G3 Why might accounts of suffering and enduring be more important to hear than stories of success? Read Hebrews 11:35-38 out loud. How do you respond to this passage? G4 Read Hebrews 11:39-40. What do you make of this idea that we have a responsibility to the saints who have gone before us? How does this compare with today’s idea of “corporate responsibility”? G5 “Jesus is the Pioneer of our faith”. What does this mean? What about “Jesus is the Perfecter of our faith”? G6 Take the ideas of God as the Architect and Builder of the city with foundations (11:10) and Jesus as the Pioneer and Perfecter of our faith (12:2) and incorporate these truths into your prayers.
