The One Thing
No one except Jesus alone
Growgroup Discussion Starters
Know
K1 Have you ever had a mountain-top experience with Jesus? Share about it with your group and what impact it has had on your life?
Grow
G1 2 Peter 1:17 | What is Peter referring to when he talks about “The Majestic Glory”. What images does this phrase bring to your mind? What emotional response do you have to it?
G2 2 Peter 2:16 | Why does Peter make a point of saying they were eyewitnesses? Why does this matter in the context of the verse?
G3 2 Peter 2:19 | The “prophetic word” is Scripture (see verse 20). What does it mean that the word is “strongly confirmed”? How has the truth of the Bible been a “lamp shining in a dark place” for you and your life?
G4 Why does it matter that the mountain top experience of Matthew 17:1-9 is bookended by a call to self-denial / sacrifice (Matt 16:24-28) and a failure in ministry due to lack of faith (Matt 17:14-20)?
G5 Matthew 17:9 | Put yourself in the place of the disciples as you walk back down the mountain with Jesus. What is going through your mind or heart at that moment? What questions might you have?
G6 Lent starts this coming Wednesday (Ash Wednesday). Are you adding anything into your life or taking it away (fasting) to give God more space in your life?
Show
S1 Matthew 1:8 | What circumstance are you currently in that concerns you / frightens you? What does it mean for you to look up from that concern / fear and “see no one except Jesus alone”? Choose Life
Growgroup Discussion Starters
Know
K1 What spoke to you about the life that Brittany and Matthew have chosen, and the road they took to get there? Would you choose to be a dairy farmer? Why or why not? (https://youtu.be/VBU95DaW7n8).
Grow
G1 Deut. 30:15-16 | Why does Moses connect loving God, walking in his ways and keeping his commands with “choosing life”? In this example, what would then be “choosing death”?
G2 Deut. 30:17-18 | Today we hear a lot about “your truth” or “my truth”. How do Moses words challenge this way of thinking?
G3 Deut. 30:17-18 | What are some of the “other gods” we’re tempted to worship today? If they lead to death, then why do we so often choose them?
G4 Psalm 119:1-3 | HOW HAPPY | What is the tone of voice of the Psalmist in these verses? What is it that leads to happiness according to these verses?
G5 Psalm 119: 4-6 | IF ONLY | What is the Psalmist’s state of mind in these verses? Do you hear hope or despair? Explain your answer.
G6 Psalm 119:7-8 | I WILL | What does it take to move from “If only” to “I will”. Think about a time you decided to do something new. What helped you make that decision? How can Philippians 2:12-13 encourage you to move from “If only” to “I will”.
Show
S1 Think of a situation which you are still struggling in. Write this word on the top of a piece of paper. Create three columns called “How happy…”, “If only…” and “I will…”. In conversation with God, fill in the columns in the following way:
“How happy” – What would be the benefits of choosing God’s ways in this situation?
“If only…” – What is holding you back from giving this situation fully to God?
“I will…” – With whatever faith you have, choose to follow God in this and write it down.

Growgroup Discussion Starters Know K1 Would you rather live in a world without salt or artificial light? How would either change your life? Grow G1 Dan mentioned some scientific impossibilities (attaining absolute zero, travelling faster than the speed of light etc). Can you think of any other impossibilities? G2 5:13 | If salt cannot lose its flavour (because sodium chloride is a stable compound), what does Jesus means when he says that we can lose our saltiness? G3 5:13 | What does Jesus means when he says “You are the salt of the earth”? G4 5:14 | What about “You are the light of the world?” G5 5:15 | What would motivate someone to hide their lamp under a basket? What is the spiritual application of this? Growgroup Discussion Starters Know K1 What did you feel God saying to you during the message / worship service? Grow G1 “When you realize you are not enough, God becomes enough”. Flip this around: if you don’t realize you’re “not enough”, will you still experience the enough-ness of God? Why or why not? G3 Matt 4:17 | THE PACKAGE | “Repent” (metanoeō) means to think differently or afterwards, i.e. reconsider (morally, feel compunction). Dan summarized it as “change the way you think”. Think of how you view the world or yourself …what are one or two things you should you “repent” of to align with God’s perspective? G4 Matt 4:17 | THE PACKAGE | How does Jesus’ presence have a bearing on the kingdom coming near?
