The Passage: Luke 4:14-21
The One Thing: Jesus' Motto of Freedom
Growgroup Discussion Starters
Know
• K1 For a moment, let’s imagine Jesus is a superhero. From what we read in scriptures, what are His superpowers?
Grow
• G1 In what ways is thinking of Jesus as a superhero helpful? How is it not?
• G2 Consider how viewing yourself as a "puny human" might be a relief.
• G3 We can tend to think of the people mentioned in Luke 4:18-19 as "them" (in other words, "not me"). Put yourself in the verse: how might you primarily identify yourself: poor, imprisoned, blind or oppressed?
• G4 Imagine if someone read a prophecy from the Bible on Sunday and then said “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your midst.” In other words: “This verse is about ME”. How would you respond? What is Jesus hoping to achieve?
• G5 For further research: "the year of the Lord's favour" refers to "the Year of Jubilee" (a concept that came out of the Old Testament). Google it and think about how Jesus coming is like the Year of Jubilee.
Show
• S1 Think about your current circumstances, emotional or physical or spiritual state. Get alone with Jesus or go for a walk with Him and confess to Him your limitations: “Jesus I am poor / imprisoned / blind / oppressed”. Be honest with Him. Then listen and receive His love.
